Best Of: Best Free File Compression Utilities

best-free-file-compression-utilities

I’m surprised that it has taken so many years for software developers to release decent freeware zipping utilities, till a few years ago you were stuck only with WinZip or WinRaR.In the last couple of years dozens of zipping applications have come out with many different features and compression rates but only a few have survived and managed to stay in the software game. The following is a list of the best free compression programs:

1) ALZip: ALZip is fairly new to me, I didn’t start using it till just a few months ago.ALZip is by far the most powerful compression utility in the game right now, it enables you to open 36 types of ZIP archives, and compression file formats, and create compressed archives in 8 different formats. It also supports the creation of self-extracting archives and can also open CD image files (.ISO, .BIN), allowing you to view and extract the content. With other features like password recovery, archive splitting, command-line options and support for large ZIP64 files it’s a must have!

2) ZipGenius: ZipGenius may not be as powerful as ALZip when it comes to file types, but it has other amazing stuff apart from offering support for 21 file formats. Some of its main features include drag and drop, 5 compression levels, full customization and integration in Windows Explorer, it also comes in with a built in FTP client to upload/download compressed files from your server. One of my favorite features is the signature one, that allows you to add your signature and contact information to any zip file you create. Some of it’s other main features are creation of self-extracting exe’s, encryption, scanner support (acquire pictures and zip them into files), backup, statistics, download time calculator, disk spanning, file export, support for OpenOffice and interaction with your Pocket PC device.

3) 7-Zip: 7-Zip is a great open source file archiver, it has most of the basic features a good archiver should have but what makes it stand out from the rest is its high compression ratio using the new 7z format, which delivers compression results that are usually 30-50% better than standard ZIP.It supports 16 file types (Packing/Unpacking: 7z, ZIP, GZIP, BZIP2 and TAR Unpacking only: RAR, CAB, ISO, ARJ, LZH, CHM, Z, CPIO, RPM, DEB and NSIS).Some of its features are self-extracting capability for 7z format files, integrates into the windows right-click menu, commandline support and a few of others.

Respected Contenders: IZArc, FilZip, BigSpeed Zipper, TUGZip, PeaZip.

Hello!, Matthew is awesomely cool with tons of knowledge and lots of experience in blah blah blah ...he doesn't like writing about himself cause it always seems to come out sounding self-centered, instead he will write this in a third person which most authors do anyway...perhaps it's because it makes us sound important cause it gives the illusion someone (non biased) thinks so highly of us they took some time off their own to write this :).Read more about me here...
