By certain, one of the most important applications (if not the most) on your computer is your firewall, It’s basically like the door to your home, it stops anything from coming inside or anything malignant alredy inside trying to go out (trojan, keylogger) of your computer. There is plenty of pay and free firewalls to choose from, all with their unique features and different methods of security but I’m going to list my top favorite free firewalls based on the security tests I have run on them.
1) Comodo Firewall: Comodo Firewall is a personal firewall that filters ingoing and outgoing traffic on your computer, not only that but it alerts you of any applications that attempts to connect to the Internet and allows you to permanently or temporarily allow or block the connection.Yea, yeah your probably thinking “Thats what all firewall do” well thats almost trust but what I liked about Comodo is the level of control you have over your security with the options it offers for advanced users like customizing the application and TCP/IP rules based on IP address, protocol and destination port, even though it’s not required unless you have a reason.Another cool thing about Comodo is it also monitors components (dll files etc.) that initiate network connections, as well as parent processes and modifications to executables (checksum verification). Some other features are attack prevention (port scanning, flooding), adjustable security levels, trusted networks, activity log, Comodo is easy to use for novice users, but allows advance users to customize it to their needs.
2) ZoneAlarm: ZoneAlarm is an overhyped simple but none the less useful firewall. To tell you the truth I started off using ZoneAlarm and it did an excellent job at protecting my computer but the problem with software like this is that they offer a Pro version so you know their freeware version will come with limited options (unlike Comodo) so convince you to buy their payware.Zone Alarm offers different modes of security including my favorite Stealth Mode which makes your computer invisible to the Internet and potential intruders. One of ZA’s cool features is the MailSafe option, MailSafe enables users of ZoneAlarm to detect and control Visual Basic Script attachments to emails they receive while ZoneAlarm is running.A well made free firewall for users who just want to install and forget about it.
3) Filseclab Personal Firewall: FPF is yet another free personal firewall that gives you control over incoming and outgoing ports, it also offers an automated rules wizard that will prompt you for action whenever an incoming or outgoing connection is detected, that does not match any of the existing rule sets. You can create rules manually and supports rules for applications, intranet, network type and time.It also has a browser independent web site access filtering, that allows you to block specified sites or limit access to a list of sites, In addition it also offers control of ICMP packets, traffic graph display, three security levels and a few others things.
Respected Contenders: Jetico Personal Firewall, NetVeda Safety.Net, Ashampoo FireWall, PC Tools Firewall Plus.

All that freeware stuff is good for your budget, but… If you want a real protection, you have to try shareware products. In case of security particlularly. I use Agnitum Outpost Security Suite for a long time, and never regret about that small price paid for my protection. With all its firewall, anti-virus, anti-spam, anti-spyware it looks really great.
