425 Can’t Open Data Connection

Are you having troubles downloading files from ftp links? I recently purchased a new multifunction printer and wanted to download the drivers and software from the website but the download link was an ftp link instead of http. example: ftp://site.com/drivers/winVista64.exe. Every time I clicked on the link with firefox I got the “425 can’t open data connection” error and when I tried with Internet Explorer the page just timed out. After much search google with no results I started playing around with a few things and managed to get it to work with three different methods.

METHOD 1:

This is by far the most effective one,

1) Open Internet Explorer.

2) Click Tools > Internet Options.

3) Click on the Advance tab.

4) Scroll down and you will find a “Use Passive FTP (for firewall and DSL modem compatibility)” option under Browsing.

5) Untick it and click Apply, then click OK.

Thats is, now go to the website and try to download from the ftp link again.

METHOD 2:

Another method that had some success with a few of my friends was turning off their firewall (including Windows Firewall if you use it.)

If you don’t know how:

1) Click Start.

2) Click on Control Panel.

3) Click on Security.

4) Under Windows Firewall click on “Turn Windows Firewall on or off”.

5) In the new popup box tick the off option, click Apply and OK.

To turn it back on, do everything above until step 5, then select On instead of off.

METHOD 3:

Another somewhat successful way was by downloading the file with a ftp client, find a free ftp client, even a Firefox plugin will do. The copy the location of the ftp link file and insert it in the address bar on the ftp client.Once you have connected right click the file and select “Download”.

I suggest the FireFTP Firefox plugin, as it is easy to use and simple to install.

Hello!, Matthew is awesomely cool with tons of knowledge and lots of experience in blah blah blah ...he doesn't like writing about himself cause it always seems to come out sounding self-centered, instead he will write this in a third person which most authors do anyway...perhaps it's because it makes us sound important cause it gives the illusion someone (non biased) thinks so highly of us they took some time off their own to write this :).Read more about me here...
