Exercises For The Spine To Grow Taller

This post is part of the How To: Grow Taller, The Complete Guide article, please read the full guide.

For me growing from the spine proved to be a bit harder than from the knees or shin bone, it might not be as time consuming but the little time you do it does tire you up.The whole goal of spinal increasing is to put the spine in traction, basically decompressing it so you can increase the fluid capacity in the disks. This will thicken and strengthen the cartilage along the entire spinal column making it longer and stronger. With a stronger spine, your can better resist the compressive forces of gravity.

Apart from giving you the extra inches you desire, it has been proven to increase blood circulation, improve digestion, increase metabolism, reduce tiredness, slow-down aging, smoothen breathing and promote general good health.

Hanging

hanging.jpg

Hanging relies on gravity to decompresses the spine lengthen and straighten to obtain height increase. Nothing complicated, just find a bar and hang on it for at least 10 seconds repetitions or as long as you can for 5 minutes a day, you must hang a total of 30 minutes a week at least (the more you do the better). It might be difficult to find a bar at home to hang on to that is high enough, a popular hanging device called Door Gym which only requires a door frame to create your own hanging bar without using any bolt or nails. If you want your back and shoulders to get wider and have that V-Taper, use a wider grip. After a few weeks in you can also accelerate the growth process by using Ankle Weights while you hang, adding extra weight to your body will increase the pressure and pull of the spine.Weightlifting Wrist Wraps are optional but I suggest it if you want to hold on longer and with less pain in your hands.

Body Inversion

inversion-hanging.gif

Body inversion can be done either with the use of an Inversion Table or Inversion Boots. When your body is inverted upside down, gravity stretches both the spine and knee cartilage at the same time. It is likely that you will be able to be inverted upside down much longer than hanging on a bar with hands which only last as long as until your arms get tired. While inversion table is not cheap and requires operating space, it has shown excellent result for those who use it consistently.Hang for at least 10 minutes a day brake it down like 5 minutes in the mornings and 5 at night to get a total of 1 hour (if more even better) a week. One of the things that really helped me is adding weight to myself while inverted hanging using the inversion boots, I held a 40 pound weight plate in my hands while hanging upside down, it was a bit uncomfortable though and I gradually built the weight up, I suggest the use of a Weight Vest as it wont put strain on your arms.

Swimming

michael-phelps.jpg

To lengthen your spine while swimming, you should consider doing the breast stroke. It is the ideal stroke because while your legs are kicking one way, your arms are stretching you the other way. Since this is happening at the same time, this helps lengthen your spine as opposed to other swimming strokes. The second reason swimming is good is because being in pool of water effectively neutralizes the effects of gravity on your spine. If you don’t know how to swim breast stroke you can read this article on About.com. To the left is a picture of Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps who specializes in breast stroke, check out his spinal column and notice how long and rangy it is.

Raised Sleeping

raised-bed-bottom.jpg

Raise the bottom part of your bed where your feet are by 2-4 inces in height. This way you use gravity to pull your spine up as opposed to when you are standing and gravity pulls your spine down. With your head below your heart, you will also allow gravity to force better blood flow to your thyroid gland which can help in the production of growth hormone.Start of with a low height maybe 2 inches and add an extra inch every month or so till your reach 5 months, it may seem easy but its hard to get use to sleeping that way. Also one of the most important things is to sleep on your back, it’s proven to work a lot better than sleeping on your belly and don’t forget to remove your pillow as the spine needs to be fully straighten out.

  2. Hey there

Thanks in advance , this guide is really helpfull.

I have to questions for you…

I’m 22 , do you think my legs might still grow up ?

I usually attend to the gym doing some weight lifting , does that interfere in any way with growing up ?

    Thanks again

  4. I go to the gym 4 times a week for weight training to gain mass and muscle. If i do some of the exercises that you recommended, such as swimming, etc, then wouldnt the two effects be cancelled out? I mean, would it really work if i was trying to gain mass and muscle AND height at the same time…? i dont think that would work

  10. phelps specializes in BUTTERFLY, not breast stroke. as a matter of fact breast stroke is the weakest one of the bunch.

  11. hey thanx for the advice. i actually got a bar to hook up onto my top doorhinge. but my doors arent that tall so i have to bend my knees in order to hang, or else i touch the floor. Is this okay? and second, my chest and arms start to feel a little numb and/or hurt. is this okay? please comment back.

    much appreciated

It doesn’t matter what position you have your knee’s in as it’s the weight they have that counts towards stretching your spine, your arms and chest feel numb cause of lack of blood circulation, it is normal but if you start to feel like needles take a short brake and rub those areas so blood circulates through them again.

thank you again for the reply. i just have one more question. Well, when i keep my head down while i hang, i feel more of the pressure of stretching on my lower back, but when i align my head by keeping it straight, the pressure of my back goes away. Which way is my head suppose to go, down, so i feel the pressure on my lower back? or up so my head and spine is aligned?

  12. I’ve heard a few people say that, I believe letting your head hang down could help more as that extra weight is pulling upwards from the beginning of your spine through your neck, ‘no pain no gain’, so why not try to mix it up by letting it hang for a while then straight it up again to relax and then repeat :).

  13. sleeping on your back means tat ur face and body facing the bed or the other way around? Can i just use a pillow and put it on my feet? Oh yeah the body must be straight right when sleeping?

  14. sleeping on your back means your face is looking at the ceiling…when you sleep on your back all the vertebra in your spine align removing tension from your back, pillow under your feet while sleeping isn’t recommended as it creates an arch in your back, use the pillow under your knee that has been proven to have the biggest effect.

  15. Hi, I have a door gym but the door frame is not high enough for me to hang straight without bending my legs at the knees. Will this form of hanging be as effective as if my legs were straight?

    Reply

    Matthew Michaels Reply:

it should be, the hanging technique is basically to create weight for your back and pull your spine down, doesn’t really matter how your legs are as long as the weight the same (dont rest or touch on anything). The problem you may have though will be comfort wise as it will put pressure on your abdomen and that might take some effectiveness from the hanging method as your spine wont be fully relaxed to stretch and rather tense.

  16. There are so many contradicting arguments about weight lifting stunting growth. Will weight lifting reduce the effectiveness of these growth exercises?

    Reply

    Matthew Michaels Reply:

I dont think weight lifting does anything to your growth unless your doing squats with huge amounts of weights, the spine is flexible so it stretches back out at night after you have done the workout.I think the reason behind this myth is that you see a lot of bulk looking shorties around, but thats because many not so tall people decided if they couldnt grow in height theyd grow in width.

  17. I do squats in a gym. I do 210 pounds. Is that too much? Will it stop growth? Or should I keep on doing squats and do your recommend exercises? (I will increase pounds in squats)

    Matthew Michaels Reply:

I cant tell you how much is a good safe weight for you cause I dont know your physical specs….you could be a 400 pound lumberyard man whos idea of warming up is chopping down a huge tree…but I think 210 is a bit too much if your average weight and less than average height…

    Matthew Michaels Reply:

Thats a bit to much for your weight I would say, maybe reduce the amount of weight and do extra general stretches? that should keep your spine flexible to easily grow back to its original height.

  20. hey matthew

i just turned 19; i think i’m 5ft 9 or 5ft 10. i really want to be 6ft 6 because i want to play pro ball as a pf. my metabolism is super high so i figured if i can’t gain weight at least i can be way up there with NBA players. i have long legs but a short upper body; so right now having michael phelps rangy spine won’t be too bad either. my friend austin is my age he even turned 19 before me; but the difference is that he’s closer to my dream height than i am because he stands at an impressive 6ft 4. keeping a balanced diet is hard for me so i take centrum tablets daily; i know trying to grow 7″ sounds obscene but i know i believe i’m still growing and with your help i should be able to get to my dream height and hopefully the league in no time.
    thanks for the support

  35. I am a 27 year old gal soon to be 28 yet i wish to grow 2 inches from 5′7”. I am an avid runner and occasionally distance swimmer. In my case, what do you recommend specifically. I understand stretching is by far the most effective way to improve length. However, i have been stretching since 2001 and so far, i have been the same height since. Question: Is been a vegetarian a slow process to my optimal height? can it also be genetics? or how well nourish a chid was raised? can an a late 20’s gal grow? can this be considered a myth or speculation?
(please provide me with concrete evidence and fact, this regimen of yours can work? If so, i my self will gladly follow your program.
    Thanks.
